The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
