The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
