Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
