A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
